Inspired by Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving after the sales of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the business owners of Belmont Village in Kitchener, Ontario came together in support of the Waterloo Region Food Bank.
The Holiday Food Drive was a collaboration between us and Community Outreach Manager from Belmont Village Financial Group, Blayr Hogg, a Belmont Village business with an excellent online reputation and very active social media properties.
25 food collection boxes were distributed to businesses in the commercial district known as Belmont Village, two weeks leading up to Giving Tuesday, December 1st. A social media campaign was initiated that engaged people using the #GivingTuesdayWR tag, the regional variation of the hashtag used in Waterloo Region for Giving Tuesday. Working with the 25 businesses we engaged their followers through social media platforms Facebook and Twitter to encourage their clients to bring a non-perishable food item when visiting the Belmont Village businesses.
We were surprised and absolutely delighted at the amount of food raised. The business owners here really came together to help bring some much needed supplies in to the Waterloo Region Food Bank.
The campaign concluded with a live weigh in of all the food boxes broadcast on Twitter's Periscope platform at Belmont Village business, Global Pet Foods who were able to provide a vet scale, perfect for weighing the boxes of food. After more than 20 minutes of weighing the over 30 boxes of food, more than 565 lbs of food had been collected from the Belmont Village businesses. An amazing feat for a 2 week campaign. $115 of donations had also been collected.
"It was a lot of fun in support of charity. We would definitely do it again." said Tawnya, owner of the Belmont Hair Studio, who with the help of her staff and clients raised 142 lbs of the total food from their location alone.
